A WWII Time Capsule Beneath the Waves

Amid the chaos of World War II, on the morning of October 26, 1942, at precisely 09:30 hours, history was made off the coast of Espiritu Santo.

The SS President Coolidge struck U.S. mines and ran aground. In an extraordinary display of discipline, 5,340 troops calmly disembarked, leaving behind an extraordinary underwater relic—a time capsule filled with stories, artifacts, and life.

Today, The Coolidge lies encrusted with coral, offering divers a glimpse into a bygone era. Some of the treasures waiting to be discovered include:

  • Guns and Battle Gear: Witness the tools of war now transformed by the sea.
  • Medical Supplies: Ghostly reminders of the troops' journey.
  • Opulent Fittings: Remnants of its luxurious past as a passenger liner.

A Sanctuary for Marine Life

Beyond its historical allure, The Coolidge has become a vibrant sanctuary for marine creatures. Divers can encounter:

  • Graceful turtles gliding through the wreck.
  • Shy yet stunning moray eels hiding in its nooks and crannies.
  • Vibrant lionfish, adding color and movement to the sunken structure.

Diving The Coolidge is more than an underwater adventure; it’s an immersive experience into the past. The wreck, now part of the Pacific’s diving crown jewels in Vanuatu, offers:
