Planning a dive holiday to Tufi, Papua New Guinea, is an exciting venture!

Here are some tips to help make your trip seamless and unforgettable:

1. Best Time to Visit

Tufi has excellent diving conditions year-round, but the dry season (May to November) often offers the best visibility and weather for diving. I took this into consideration when finalising these travel dates.

2. Travel Logistics

  • Flights: We need to book flights early, as options to Tufi are limited. Most international flights arrive in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. From there, you’ll take a domestic flight to Tufi, typically operated by Air Niugini.
  • Baggage: Checked baggage allowances apply, especially if bringing your own dive gear. Some domestic flights have stricter weight limits.
  • You will require a visitors visa for PNG, we can get this at the Airport
  • Airport transfers to Tufi resort.

3. Accommodation in Tufi

  • Tufi Dive Resort is the main choice for divers, offering an awesome dive package, we can arrange local excursions, and a cozy, authentic stay. Book as early as possible to secure the preferred room type.
  • We have twin share double standard rooms, as basic- I have arranged a bonus FREE upgrade to Deluxe bungalow accommodation for the first people to book, along with daily laundry service and free canoe use at the house reef.
  • I have also booked the Full Board meal package that includes all meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacks and alcohol are yours to arrange.

4. Dive Preparation

  • Certifications: Ensure your diving certifications are up to date and carry a valid dive log.
  • Insurance: Invest in comprehensive travel and dive insurance. DAN (Divers Alert Network) is highly recommended for scuba divers.
  • Gear: Check with the dive centre to see what equipment they provide. If you’re bringing your own, ensure it’s serviced and in good condition.

5. Dive Highlights in Tufi

  • Reefs and Marine Life: Tufi boasts stunning coral reefs, WWII wrecks, and a rich variety of marine life, including pygmy seahorses, hammerheads, and vibrant reef fish.
  • Fjords: Don’t miss exploring Tufi’s unique fjords, which offer sheltered waters teeming with critters—ideal for macro photography.

6. Additional Activities

  • Cultural Experiences: Visit local villages to learn about the culture and traditions of the Oro Province.
  • Hiking and Kayaking: Explore the lush rainforests and tranquil fjords. Many resorts offer guided tours.

7. Health & Safety

  • Vaccinations: Check with your healthcare provider for recommended vaccinations for Papua New Guinea.
  • Malaria Prevention: Tufi is in a malaria-prone region, so consult your doctor about prophylactics and bring mosquito repellent.
  • Hydration and Decompression: Stay hydrated and follow safe diving practices to avoid decompression sickness.

8. Budgeting and Currency

  • Currency: The local currency is the Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK). Exchange some money before arrival, as ATMs may be limited.
  • Tipping: Tipping isn’t customary in PNG, but small gratuities for exceptional service are appreciated.
  • Extras: Budget for dive permits, nitrox fills, and optional excursions.

9. Packing Essentials

  • Dive gear (if bringing your own)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • A waterproof bag for boat rides
  • Underwater camera for capturing memories
  • A travel adapter for PNG’s Type I sockets
  • Bug spray

10. Book Early to Avoid Disappointment

Here are some detailed tips that helped me to plan your scuba diving trip to Tufi, Papua New Guinea, for late 2025: I went to PNG in 2018 and TUFI was high on my list of places to visit and research. I found the people awesome, the diving was terrific and the accommodation quite comfortable with amazing views down the fjord and I slept extremely well on the comfy beds.

I often sat on my Balcony enjoying a beer, just taking in the view.

1. Researching the Destination

  • Diving Conditions: Tufi offered excellent diving with vibrant reefs, WWII wrecks, and unique fjord environments. Visibility can reach up to 30 metres, and water temperatures range between 25°C and 30°C.
  • Weather: The dry season (May to November) is the most popular time for diving, with calmer seas and better visibility.

2. Travel Arrangements

  • International Flights are booked to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea’s capital, with major airlines like Qantas, then local flights by Air Niugini.
  • Domestic Travel: From Port Moresby, we take a domestic flight to Tufi. Air Niugini typically operates flights to this remote destination, but schedules can be limited.
  • Transfers: I have arranged transfers from Tufi Airport to our accommodation in advance.

3. Accommodation

  • Tufi, is the main accommodation in the area, that offers dive packages, local excursions, and stunning views. It is advisable to book early as it has limited capacity.
  • We have an all-inclusive dive package that include meals, accommodations, and dives for convenience.

4. Diving Preparation

  • Certifications: Make sure your scuba certifications (e.g., PADI or SSI) are up to date and bring your dive logbook.
  • Equipment: If bringing your own, ensure it’s recently serviced and includes essentials like a dive computer and torch.
  • Insurance: Purchase dive and travel insurance. Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a great option for dive-specific coverage.
  • Health Check: Ensure you’re fit for diving with a recent medical check-up if required.

5. Health and Safety Tips

  • Vaccinations: Consult a doctor about recommended vaccines for Papua New Guinea, such as hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus.
  • Malaria: Tufi is in a malaria zone; take prophylactics, bring insect repellent, and sleep under a mosquito net if needed.
  • Safety: Papua New Guinea is a developing country, so we are going to stick to organised tours and remember like anywhere you travel- stay aware of your surroundings.

6. Packing Checklist

  • Dive Gear: Regulator, BC, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, and dive computer.
  • Essentials: Reef-safe sunscreen, reusable water bottle, big bottle of mosquito repellent, and a lightweight rain jacket.
  • Underwater Camera: Capture the marine life and stunning coral reefs.
  • Clothing: Lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, and comfortable shoes for land activities. Long sleeves for evenings
  • Adapters: PNG uses Type I plugs, so bring a travel adapter if needed.

7. Activities Beyond Diving

  • Explore the Fjords: Tufi is famous for its breathtaking fjords. Take a kayak or boat tour.
  • Cultural Visits: Meet local villagers, experience the traditional culture of the Oro Province.
  • Hiking: Enjoy guided treks through lush rainforests and stunning landscapes.

8. Budget and Currency

  • Currency: The local currency is Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK). Exchange money in Port Moresby as ATMs in Tufi are scarce.
  • Extras: Budget for additional activities, dive permits, and nitrox fills.
The resort takes credit cards but will charge a transaction fee

9. Booking Timelines

  • Flights: Book your international and domestic flights at least 6–9 months in advance to secure the best fares.
  • Resort: I have reserved eight accommodation and dive packages early to ensure availability.

10. Final Tips

  • Double-check entry requirements, including visas. Most visitors need a tourist visa, which can often be obtained online.
  • Plan for a few buffer days in Port Moresby in case of delays with domestic flights.
